Opening together but some imbalance spoils. Bases not in time into A. I feel the music gets a bit disjointed and doesn’t flow the way it should. D. A fair andf reasonable sound but I have my doubts about your general tuning. Please don’t chop off the ens of crotchets! E. Not always comfortable in the moving lines. Close, fair.
A comfortable opening, tasteful noise. A. Watch the balance in the duo please. B. A lilting tempo. C. Change doesn’t quite come off. Fanfare bold. D. Hangs nicely together and good dynamics ensue. E. Poor balance spoil close, not quite together on last pause.
Trom overshadows the rest of the ensemble. A. Drives along in good style. A good build to C is made. I do hear the upper detail. D. Not your neatest to here. Links just come off. E. Don’t overdo the Rubato please. You must give the triplets and….. time to speak. G. Fair. H. Builds well, watch the balance in the cornets in the approach to I. K. A bit untidy. Closing accel gets a bit wild and unmusical.
A performance that lacked, somewhat, in musicality with too many problems for comfort being apparent.
Not the best start ensemble is ok but intonation is not always as it should be. C. onwards the individuals are not matching movement and sound across the band. More could be made of the dynamics and effects.
Although a healthy mp it flows and you get a nice feel for the music. C. Needs to be more aligned vertically across the score. E. wrong notes in the melody are unfortunate. However some balanced sounds heard.
Good start and off to a good pace. Quaver motifs don’t quite come off. C. Brilliantp works well. Poco rall into the meno mosso doesn’t come off. E. Triplets far too fast quavers not semis!! Not all component parts receive the same care and attention. Over all the devil is in the detail and unfortunately the inner detail wasn’t as well managed as it should be.
GBBA Entertainment Contest
Barnard Castle Not a good start. Good trombone sound! I like your energy! Ensemble very unstable at F, horns really pushing the tempo. Good finish.
Swing Low Very nice tone from soloist. Lovely soprano at B Soloist has great style and projection in swing section.
Sunrise Parts don't really move together in this opening section. Tuning at 17! Horns. Some uncomfortable moments 23 to C Again sop shines after D Untidy in the last 3 bars.
Zambezi Good impact to start. Could have more detail in the articulation at A, the arranger has indicated a lot of detail here and it would really add to the feel of this piece.
Conquest Well controlled start, and very nice euph at A + flugelhorn at E. Solo cornet could project more at F. Tuning in horns not great at H. Euph enjoy J, just be careful with the high register tuning. You really go for fff!! Well done tenor drum throughout!
ConclusionOverall a programme that suited the band, work on those tuning problems and the pulse in the ensemble playing and you will see an improvement in the whole band.Ian Porthouse

Pillowell Silver Band.
Reasonably secure start has some balance problems- melody
not always projected. Bright section is not quite tidy- percussion gets out
occasionally, but it has a cheerful and vivacious atmosphere. Dynamics are
somewhat restricted and intonation is occasionally an issue.
82- Flugel plays with pleasing languor and a sweet tone. It
is difficult to hear the trombone solo. Glock and Euph not together 110.
Euph sharp at 116, and more balance issues. Good solo cornet
at 136, playing with conviction. Not together at 160 and too many blemishes.
179, rather too many errors. 198 tempo change well executed. Euph is sharp in
upper register. Grandioso section sounds tired and intonation suffers. Bright
section is enthusiastic, but untidy and intonation is an issue to close. This
was an enthusiastic but technically flawed performance.
A confident start with some intonation issues in Flugel and
ensemble. Good tempo at 11. Style achieved and some articulation achieved.
Trombones at 64 a little wayward in ensemble playing. Band need to finish
together before 82. Flugel begins well with slight slips, but I like the
feeling of a musical approach. Nice tone! Trombone solo lacks volume and
clarity. Some good dynamic range. 115 full start, Euphonium intonation suspect.
Band rushes at the repeat section at 147. The ensemble playing at 160 is
wayward. Cornet and Euphonium not quite making it at 172. 179 is frantic.!
Tempo at 198 needs to settle. Articulation needs attention and intonation is an
issue at too many occasions. Tempo in Grandioso =120 was too slow. Solo cornet
at 248 gave a pleasant performance. Trombones never very clear in 264. “A
little jazz” feel was not reached. Nice bright tempo at 279 and the band do
well here, led well by the cornets. Basics of ensemble playing together,
balance and intonation need work. Good effort. Thank you.
Fair comments I think but a disappointing result none the less. Well done all for your commitment to the cause, looking forward to the fourth section next year. With another 12 months of building and hard work we can do well there next year. Ian
